What’s the hurry, Sparky?

KARACHI (Reuters) – A Pakistani man has committed suicide outside his fiancee’s home after he thought he accidentally killed her while trying to persuade her to get married early, police said Saturday.

Here’s the part that I don’t get.  Do chicks really dig guys who shoot guns in the air?

The man, Ahmed Ashraf, was shooting a gun in the air outside his fiancee’s home in the southern city of Karachi on Friday as part of his efforts to persuade her to get married two months early when a stray bullet accidently hit her, police said.

A Muslim teacher has been axed after she insisted on wearing a veil to teach young children.

Aishah Azmi, 24, was asked to take it off in class after pupils said they found English lessons hard to understand because they could not see her lips move.

The junior school in Dewsbury, West Yorks, said she could wear her veil in corridors and the staff room – but must remove it when teaching. Angry Miss Azmi refused, claiming the veil was part of her cultural identity, and was suspended.

A council source said yesterday: “It is ridiculous. How can you teach English to young children with a veil over your face?”

Reportedly, the school’s water-polo coach has been asked to not wear a burka while demonstrating passing techniques to her charges. No word on whether the PC police will also be coming to her rescue.

Fool me twice more, and cost me $1.25 million, and I’ll start to get suspicious.

MADRID (Reuters) – A Spanish woman staged fake kidnappings of her son four times and got his father to pay her more than a million euros ($1.26 million) in ransom money, newspaper El Mundo reported Friday.

Police in the southern Spanish city of Seville arrested the woman and five accomplices, including the 15-year-old son who cooperated in the deception by calling his father on the telephone and begging him to pay up.

The father paid ransoms after the first three fake abductions without realizing the involvement of his son’s mother, from whom he had separated. He became suspicious the fourth time and hired a private detective, El Mundo reported.

Where do people this dumb actually get that kind of money in the first place?

Solitary confinement just isn’t what it used to be, at least in Vietnam:

HANOI (Reuters) – A death-row inmate held in solitary confinement in Vietnam for almost a year is pregnant and is seeking a pardon to give birth, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

The Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper quoted a police doctor as saying tests in September confirmed that convicted heroin trafficker Nguyen Thi Oanh, 39, was then 11 weeks pregnant.

The report said it was the first time that a death-row prisoner had become pregnant in Vietnam and that police were investigating how it had happened.

Oanh’s husband was serving a jail sentence at another prison in another province, the newspaper said.

I’m gonna assume that Oanh’s husband can’t defy the laws of physics, so perhaps there’s some other answer to this vexing mystery. And since this is an atheist country, the old transporter beam theory of conception probably doesn’t apply, either.

Hmmm. I wonder.
