Steak and kidney pie, anyone?

Socialized medicine for the win:

LONDON, England (Reuters) — Medical officials said on Thursday that doctors at a Scottish hospital had removed the wrong kidney from a patient during an operation.

John Heron, who media reports said was believed to be in his 60s, had the healthy organ taken out during surgery at Ayr Hospital.

“It is with deep regret that I confirm that a patient being cared for in the Ayr Hospital has had a healthy kidney removed,” said Bob Masterton, executive director for the NHS Ayrshire and Arran Trust.

“Our thoughts are with the patient and family, to whom we apologize for this tragic error. Staff are supporting the patient and family in planning for the best possible medical care for Mr Heron in the future.”

In a statement, Heron’s family said they were “devastated by the disastrous professional errors that should never have happened.

“We, the family, want to be sure that no other family experiences this in the future.”

No word on who received the healthy kidney, or what kind of compensation will be given to the family. Perhaps they can get a barrel of single-malt and a year’s supply of haggis?
